Initiatives by the AU Peace and Security Council

By early 2004, the work of the Peace and Security Council had already been initiated. For example, the AU Peace and Security Council met on 27 March 2004 to assess the situation in Cote D’Ivoire and resolved to support the initiatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). On 25 May 2004, the Peace and Security Council met, under the Chairmanship of Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, to analyse the security situation across Africa, and particularly the African agenda for conflict prevention, management and resolution. This meeting assessed the situations in the Sudanese region of Darfur, where minorities are faced with tragic conditions following an ongoing conflict, as well as the situation in Somalia which remained precarious.
